Outdoor enthusiasts from around the globe visit Dead Horse Point State Park to capture a photograph of one of the most stunning vistas in the world. A true gem in the Utah State Park system, the spectacular region highlights the true beauty of canyon country, with wind-blown sand formations, rugged mountains, and vibrant colors that change depending on the time of day.

With insurmountable natural beauty, Dead Horse Point State Park offers unlimited opportunities for enjoying outdoor activities.

Hiking

Seven miles of relatively easy hiking trails connect nine different overlooks throughout the park. The trails wind through the mesa top and desert plateau with minimal elevation loss or gain.

Dead Horse Point Overlook Trail is the most popular attraction for visitors. The paved ADA-accessible pathway starts at the overlook parking lot and offers stunning vistas overlooking the Colorado River and canyons below.

Other popular hiking trails include:

  • Visitor Center Natural Trail
  • Desert View Outlook
  • East Rim Trail System
  • West Rim Trail System
  • Bighorn Overlook
  • The Far East Rim Mixed-Use Trail System

Sturdy footwear is highly recommended due to the slick, uneven terrain, and dogs are permitted on the trails but must always remain on a leash.

Mountain Biking

Dead Horse Point State Park offers over 17 miles of non-motorized trails that weave through native pinyon and juniper trees, featuring mixed terrain and breathtaking views of the canyons below.

The Intrepid Trail System includes the following trails, which are designed for mountain bikers of all ages and experience levels:

  • Great Pyramid
  • Raven Roll
  • Big Chief
  • Crossroad
  • Whiptail
  • Twisted Tree
  • Prickly Pair

Pet-Friendly Trails

Pets are welcome on all trails at Dead Horse Point State Park as long as visitors respect the following guidelines:

  • Keep pets on a leash at all times (even in the campground)
  • Pets are not allowed at the Wingate Yurts
  • Clean up after pets—dog waste bag dispensers are readily available throughout the park
  • Never leave pets unattended in a parked vehicle

Stargazing

There is nothing like the night sky at Dead Horse Point State Park. Recognized in 2016 as an International Dark Sky Park, it is one of the most accessible areas for stargazing in Moab.

With the city lights far from view, the high plateau offers spectacular views of the celestial sky. The park newspaper keeps visitors updated on current happenings, special events, and scheduled activities, which often include:

  • Full moon walks
  • Star parties
  • Sunset talks at the overlook
  • Opportunities to use a telescope
  • Ranger-led informational programs

Exhibits

Dead Horse Point State Park is rich in cultural heritage and home to thousands of years of human history, with even the park’s name originating from a long-storied legend involving a group of cowboys and a herd of wild, thirsty horses. The Visitor Center, in coordination with the Moab Museum, brings this regional history to life with fascinating presentations and exhibits.
